SEDONA, Ariz. – Grand Canyon posted the third-best second round in the 11-team Red Rocks Invitational, maintaining its third-place position heading entering Sunday's final round at Oakcreek Country Club.
GCU freshman
Alexis Vakasiuola entered Saturday in second place out of 68 golfers after a 6-under-par 66 first round and left the day tied for second at 3 under par. The San Tan Valley native shot 3 over with four birdies to put herself in prime position for a third consecutive top-five finish.
Vakasiuola opened the spring by taking second place at the Alice and John Wallace Women's Golf Classic and won the GCU Invitational two weeks ago.
The Lopes' best second-round score among the starting five came from junior
Jess Haines, who shot 1 under with three birdies. Haines notched five pars and two birdies over her final seven holes and is tied for 19th at 4 over.
While Haines jumped 13 spots Friday's finish, GCU freshman
Honor Johnson jumped 12 spots with a 2-over Saturday. Johnson tallied four birdies, including back-to-back birdies on the 17th and 18th holes to close out her day. Johnson is 40th at 11 over.
Lopes junior
Lena Tremouille is tied for 19th with Haines at 4 over for the tournament after a 3-over second round. Sophomore teammate
Allie Justiz is 25th at 7 over par.
GCU went 4 under as a team over the final two holes of the day to move into third place, four strokes behind second-place Gonzaga.
Among the Lopes' individual entreies, freshman
Clara Duerr matched Haines' 1-under total with six birdies and moved up 11 spots for 15th. Duerr, along with classmate
Rosie Maguire and sophomore
Matilda Samervong, are competing as individualists. Maguire is 4 over and tied for 19th, while Samervong is 14 over and 49th.
Final round action begins Sunda at 7:30 a.m. Host Northern Arizona holds the team lead at 13 under thorugh two rounds.
