"GCU created college basketball's rowdiest secret with stunning quickness. Home to possibly the best student section in college basketball. Duke has the Cameron Crazies. Kansas has The Phog. GCU has the Havocs." Andrew Joseph, USA Today
"Few in-game experiences compare to a GCU game." Andy Staples, The Athletic
"In college basketball, in my 40+ years, this was the toughest crowd I've ever faced. You've got something special here." Rick Pitino, former Louisville coach
Global Credit Union Arena at Grand Canyon University is Phoenix's premier mid-sized indoor venue and serves as the primary home of Lopes men's and women's basketball and women's volleyball teams as well as a wide assortment of university events.
The arena has provided the Lopes a definitive home-court advantage since opening its doors before the 2011-12 basketball season. With a seating capacity of 7,000 and a prime location on campus, the venue is regularly packed to the rafters with students and fans, providing an electric atmosphere ripe for success. Since its opening, the GCU men’s basketball team has been dominant in the arena, posting an overall record of 190-41 (.823), including seven seasons of at least 15 wins. The men's basketball team posted its first perfect season in the arena in 2023-24, going 16-0.
The arena hit new levels in 2018-19. With an average men's basketball crowd of 7,170 fans in the 7,000-seat arena, it was the fullest venue in college basketball with a percent capacity of 102.42%.
The Lopes’ record playing a regular complement of Division I guests has been impressive as well, as the men's basketball team owns a 160-39 mark at home while the women's basketball team is 132-47 since 2013-14. The success on the court helped GCU to three postseason tournament appearances in its first three years transitioning to the NCAA’s highest level. The men's basketball team clinched its first D-I conference title on the Global Credit Union Arena floor against Utah Valley on March 6, 2021.
An intimidating factor for opponents, the large Havocs student section has proven to be one of the best in the nation. The Havocs create an imposing backdrop for visiting teams as they fill the bleachers with energy and enthusiasm. With a push from the Havocs, a packed house is a regular occurrence and has led to an incredible rise in attendance for the men’s team in the first decade since Global Credit Union Arena opened.
The further Grand Canyon progresses as a Division I school, the larger the Havocs have grown and the more national attention they have received. The student section has earned the distinction of the "biggest party in college basketball" by numerous national publications including Bleacher Report, USA Today, The New York Times and SB Nation (twice).
Home attendance has tripled since the arrival of the arena, with a per-game average of over 7,100 fans coming through the doors in 2018-19. While crowds of over 7,000 used to represent milestones, it has become a common occurrence at Global Credit Union Arena as the Lopes rise to Division I prominence.
Student-athletes love the atmosphere while also enjoying first-class amenities and everything needed to be successful right at their fingertips. From an on-site medical facility to the strength and conditioning area and locker room with a players’ lounge and study area, the Lopes have all the comforts of home just a short walk from student housing.
The facility originally broke ground in the summer of 2010 and was completed before the start of the following basketball season. It is owned and operated by the university.
