Coming off sweeping the Mountain West weekly honors for the conference's Golfer and Freshman of the Week, Grand Canyon's
Alexis Vakasiuola one-upped her success with nearly one of the best single rounds in program history.
The Lopes freshman tied GCU's single-round record low with a 7-under-par 65 in the second round of the GCU Invitational on Tuesday at GCU Golf Course.
Her efforts, led by a flurry of second-round comebacks compared to the Lopes' first rounds, have put GCU in first place after 36 holes at 5 under. Idaho is second at 16 over, followed by Northern Illinois at 20 over.
Vakasiuola leads the tournament with a 5-under total, bouncing back from a 2-over first round that included a quadruple-bogey at the par-4 fifth hole. The Combs High School alumna had two birdies through the first four holes of the second round and caught fire from the fifth hole on, tallying birdies on Nos. 5 and 6 before an eagle on the par-5 seventh hole.
GCU junior
Jess Haines mounted a comeback in her first round, going 4 under over her final five holes to shoot even par. Haines was 4 over through 12 holes prior to her birdie spree. Haines' second round began with a bogey and a double bogey, but like the first, ended her afternoon with four birdies over her final seven holes played.
Haines is third at 2 under overall, two shots back of Vakasiuola.
Sophomore
Allie Justiz is the third Lope in the top five, totaling back-to-back even-par 72s. Justiz tallied six birdies and had a slew of 11 straight birdies to end her first round.
GCU freshman
Honor Johnson and junior teammate
Lena Tremouille each finished at 5 over and are tied for eighth. GCU's individual entries include sophomore
Matilda Samervong (seventh, 3 over), freshman
Rosie Maguire (tied for 16th, 10 over) and freshman
Clara Duerr (tied for 20th, 14 over) also competed for the Lopes.
The third and final round begins Wednesday at 7:30 a.m.
