DENVER - Grand Canyon sophomore pitcher
Jake Wong was named the Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week the conference announced on Monday morning. Wong tossed six innings of shutout baseball in the season opener, limiting No. 22 Oklahoma State to just one hit in GCU's dominant 6-1 victory over the Cowboys.
"I threw a lot of fastballs tonight," Wong said following Friday's victory. "That's my pitch and that was my best pitch tonight. Against a good team like that, you have to use your 3-0 pitches, my slider and change-up, they were helpful as well. But my fastball was my go-to tonight."
Used mostly in relief last season, Wong impressed in his debut as a Friday night starter. He struck out a career-high seven including three of the first five batters he faced.
"Wong set the tone early," head coachÂ
Andy Stankiewicz said after the game. "He did a great job and gave us six complete innings. For an opening outing, you can't ask for more of the job he did. He set the tempo for us."
Wong is the first GCU pitcher to win a WAC weekly award since Coley Bruns did so on March 23, 2015.
Zach Malis and
Preston Pavlica won WAC Hitter of the Week awards last season for Grand Canyon.
Joining Wong in the WAC weekly awards was UTRGV's Jose Garcia who hit for the cycle and homered twice.
The Lopes and Cowboys play the rubber match of the three-game series in a Monday matinée at Brazell Stadium. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. MST.
