PHOENIX – Grand Canyon men's basketball head coach
Dan Majerle has announced the signing of Fiifi Aidoo, an exciting point guard from Helsinki, Finland.
Aidoo played at the Helsinki Basketball Academy where he was coached by former Atlanta Hawk and Utah Ute, Hanno Mottola. Under Mottola, the 6-foot-2 guard has received experience playing for a coach with NBA ties, and a former player that played in the NCAA National Championship game in 1998 for Rick Majerus against Kentucky.
"Fiifi has great athleticism, a great skill set and can shoot the ball," said Mottola. "I feel the American style game suits him well. He is an easy going guy who really enjoyed his visit, meeting the guys and fitting right in. He's both a competitor and funny guy."
In May, Aidoo earned a Eurobasket.com First Division Player of the Week award, pouring in 24 points with nine rebounds and six assists. For the season, he earned Eurobasket.com All-Finnish First Division, Division A Second-Team honors. Aidoo averaged 13.1 ppg, 5.8 rpg and 3.1 apg for the season. Aidoo was a member of the Finland U20 national team and won the B-level European Championship in 2015. With the championship, the squad earned the promotion to the 2016 European Championships (top 16 countries) which Finland is hosting in July in Helsinki.
Aidoo joins a promising class of newcomers with Darion Clark, Shaq Carr, Oscar Frayer and Ibrahima Sankare. The Lopes are coming off a highly successful 27-7 season, advancing to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament quarterfinals. The 2016-17 season will be the final year of the four-year NCAA Division I transition period before GCU is eligible for postseason play.
