Grand Canyon completed the three-game sweep of Cal Poly and extended their season opening winning streak to seven with a 9-3 win today in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
Cameron Brendel delivered a superb performance on the bump, allowing only two runs (one earned) on four hits over 8.0 innings. He fanned four and walked three.
"Cameron was terrific today," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "We needed that in a big way and needed him to go deep into the ballgame because our bullpen was a little taxed after the first two games this weekend. He pitched a great against this very good offensive team."
The Antelopes did their offensive damage in two innings of work, scoring four in the third inning and five in the seventh inning.
In the four-run third, GCU received RBI singles from
Paul Panaccione and
David Walker.
Garrison Schwartz had a two-run triple in the frame.
Humberto Aranda and
Ben Mauseth opened the seventh inning with back-to-back doubles to increase the Antelopes' lead to 5-0. Later in the inning,
Rouric Bridgewater picked up his first two RBIs of the season with a single through the right side.
Schwartz finished with three hits, while Panaccione,
Chad De La Guerra and Mauseth each had two.
"Garrison had another nice game and got some big hits when we needed them," added Stankiewicz. "Chad had a good day and Rouric's RBIs came at a good time."
"Overall this was a really solid weekend," said Stankiewicz. "Anytime you can come out to Southern California and compete with a team like Cal Poly you have to be encouraged. Our guys stayed on it all weekend and didn't give anything away. This is a good stepping stone for our program as we look to establish ourselves. I'm really proud of the effort they all showed this weekend."
The Antelopes will remain on the road for a single game at Cal State Northridge on Tuesday. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. (Arizona time).
