The American Baseball Coaches Association announced its 2013 Rawlings/ABCA Division II West All-Region Teams, and Grand Canyon University head coach Andy Stankiewicz was honored with Coach of the Year accolades.
Stankiewicz has led the team to one its most successful seasons in recent history, having advanced to the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship for the first time since joining the division in 1999. GCU has won 39 games so far, the most since the 1990 squad collected 43 wins en route to finishing fifth at the NAIA National Championships. Stankiewicz was also tabbed as the 2013 Pacific West Conference Coach of the Year after the Antelopes earned a share of the conference crown with an impressive 26-10 record.
Pitchers
Coley Bruns and
Andrew Naderer garnered Second Team All-Region honors.
Bruns opened the season out of the bullpen for GCU, but quickly transitioned into a solid part of the starting rotation, going 7-1 with a 2.21 ERA (18 ER in 73.1 IP) during the regular season, the best mark among ‘Lopes starters. He posted a solid outing in his West Regional start on May 18, allowing 4 runs in 7.2 innings of work. His .198 batting average against is tops in the conference as he was also chosen as an NCBWA Honorable Mention selection.
Naderer, the Freshman of the Year in the PacWest, posted an 8-2 record and 2.62 ERA (22 ER in 75.2 IP) in 13 starts during the regular season. He has been outstanding in three postseason games, allowing just 3 earned runs on 12 hits and 7 walks with 20 strikeouts in 19.0 innings of work for a 1.42 ERA.
Naderer leads the team in wins, complete games (4), and strikeouts (87) en route to also earning a spot on the Second Team All-Conference and NCBWA All-West Region Honorable Mention. Among conference pitchers, he was tied for second in wins, fourth in strikeouts, tied for fourth in complete games, eighth in innings pitched, and is one of just 13 PacWest pitchers with a complete game shutout on the season. Naderer had back-to-back complete games on April 19 and 27, allowing just 3 runs in 14.0 innings of work.
Additionally, the ABCA released its 2013 Rawlings West Region Gold Glove winners, with GCU picking up three nods on the list. These student-athletes are now eligible for selection to the ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Team.
Michael Pomeroy earned the honor for first basemen in the region, owning a perfect fielding percentage with 483 putouts and 41 assists in 524 chances. Pomeroy has started 50 games at first base.
Derek Mendoza was tabbed as the best fielding third baseman with a .924 fielding percentage with 24 putouts and 86 assists in 119 total chances. He had a stretch of 15 consecutive errorless games from March 8-30 and in total, has seen action in 53 games defensively.
Naderer picked up the honor as a pitcher, having collected eight putouts and 28 assists in 36 chances without committing an error.
