The Western Athletic Conference today announced that it will add the sport of men’s swimming and diving beginning with the 2013-14 season.
Next year’s WAC membership includes three full-time members that sponsor men’s swimming and diving; CSU Bakersfield, Grand Canyon and Seattle. Joining these schools will be affiliate members Air Force, UNLV, North Dakota and Wyoming giving the WAC seven teams in 2013-14.
The 2014 WAC Championship meet will be held Feb. 26-Mar. 1 at the Palo Alto College Aquatic Center in San Antonio, Texas and will be combined with the women’s programs.
“The addition of men’s swimming as a WAC sponsored sport is great news,” said GCU head coach Steve Schaffer. “Having a combined championship with the WAC women’s programs at an excellent facility in San Antonio will mean our program can prepare together for the conference championships instead of having to be split between two different conferences. It is what we are used to from the RMAC and I think our swimmers enjoy competing with our men and women together in the same place.”
“We are excited about the reinstatement of men’s swimming and diving to the Western Athletic Conference,” said Jeff Hurd, WAC Interim Commissioner. “We look forward to one of our original sports returning to the WAC and watching these teams work toward winning a conference championship.”
The Antelopes completed their run in NCAA Division II Men’s Swimming with two fourth-place finishes at the NCAA’s over the past three seasons.
“The addition of UNLV, Wyoming, Air Force and North Dakota’s men’s’ programs as affiliate members will give us a very good level of competition in the conference. UNLV and Wyoming placed first and second, respectively, in the MPSF Men’s Conference Championships, so they will set the standard for the rest of us for next year. We will have our work cut out for us, but I think it will be a great meet. We are looking forward to the challenge.”
This will be the second time that the WAC has sponsored men’s swimming & diving as the sport was part of the conference from its inaugural 1962-63 season through 1999-2000. Three of the programs joining the WAC this upcoming year competed previously in the conference. Wyoming was an original member during all but one of those years, while Air Force was added in 1980 and UNLV joined in 1996.
