The Grand Canyon University baseball team placed two on
Collegiate Baseball’s West Region Pre-Season All-American team, as prepared by the American Baseball Coaches Association’s NCAA Division II All-America Baseball Committee. Two others were recognized as a Player to Watch and Newcomer to Watch.
Senior
Derek Mendoza and junior
Michael Pomeroy were on the region’s Pre-Season All-American team following stellar 2012 campaigns. Mendoza was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writer’s Association (NCBWA) 2012 Division II Honorable Mention All-America team, NCBWA All-West Region First Team and American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings First-Team All-West Region, as well as earning Pacific West Conference Co-Newcomer of the Year.
Mendoza finished second in the Pacific West Conference with a .407 batting average (70-for-172), third with 70 hits, tied for third with 16 doubles, fifth with 92 total bases, a .477 on-base percentage and a .535 slugging percentage and tied for sixth with 39 RBI.
Pomeroy garnered 2012 NCAA American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings Second Team All-West Region honors after leading all PacWest Conference hitters with a .422 average (79-for-187) and 79 hits en route to being named PacWest Tri-Player of the Year. He was also named to the NCBWA 2012 All-West Region Second Team.
Also among conference hitters, Pomeroy’s 95 total bases ranked third, his .486 on-base percentage was fourth, his 14 doubles tied for sixth and his .508 slugging percentage was 10
th.
Sophomore
Jorge Perez was listed as a Player to Watch for the upcoming season after posting a 3-3 record and 2.48 ERA in his first season with the ‘Lopes in 2012.
Freshman
Paul Panaccione was named as a Newcomer to Watch after earning First Team All-Division II honors last year at Liberty High School.
GCU will open the 2013 slate with their annual Alumni Game on Feb. 2, while their first regular season game is slated for Feb. 8 versus UC San Diego at Brazell Stadium.
