The Grand Canyon University men’s soccer team wrapped up preseason play with a scoreless tie against Vanguard University in the final game of the Vanguard Soccer Tournament in Costa Mesa, Calif. The game went into double overtime as both teams were held scoreless over 110 minutes of play.
“I couldn’t ask for more as we have concluded our preseason play,” said head coach Petar Draksin. “This week was fantastic for us as we prepare for the season. All of these teams were highly competitive. I saw everything I needed to see."
Joshua Zehring played at the net for the entire game, recording five of the six saves for GCU. Four of those saves came within the two overtime periods. Vanguard had 11 shots and five corner kicks, while GCU posted seven and three, respectively.
Yared Solscheid had three shots for the Antelopes, while
Oshane Brown had one shot on goal in two attempts.
“I’m very pleased with our players, especially defensively as we did not allow a goal,” added Draksin. “On Thursday, we beat an excellent team in Concordia and today in our last preseason game, we had an overtime tie with Vanguard, who is also a very good team. They are very difficult to play against and they really tested our defense tonight. I feel the game could have gone either way and both goalkeepers played very well.”
“We had a great week and are looking forward to coming home tomorrow. We will use the next few days to prepare for our season opener against CSU-Pueblo on Friday.”
The ‘Lopes will open regular season play with a contest against CSU-Pueblo on Aug. 31 on the GCU Soccer Field. GCU is hosting the ThunderWolves, Sonoma State and St. Martin’s in a two-day tournament in Phoenix.
