The Grand Canyon University men’s soccer team defeated Concordia University-Irvine, 1-0, in their first exhibition match of the 2012 season as part of the Vanguard Soccer Tournament in Costa Mesa, Calif.
“Concordia played UCLA to a 1-1 tie in an exhibition game on Sunday and will probably be a top-10 NAIA program in the country this season,” said head coach Petar Draksin. “It was a great test for our guys. We did some great things in the game today, but also made some mistakes. We still have time to work out the kinks.”
The Antelopes scored the lone goal of the game with just under three minutes to play. GCU outshot Concordia, 15-13, and also outdueled the Eagles in saves by a margin of 8-4.
“We won the game with three or four minutes left to play on a goal by
Chris Green with the assist from
Steven Garcia,” said Draksin. “I think we played better in the first half, but I felt they had the better play in the second half.
Joshua Zehring had an outstanding performance in the goal. Two of our centerbacks,
Jamiesh Holait and
Zoran Nincevic, also had a great game. Overall, this was a great test for us because you can only play intrasquad games so many times. We are looking forward to Saturday’s game against Vanguard, who is also a very good NAIA program.”
The ‘Lopes will next be in action when they wrap-up preseason play with their second exhibition game as part of the tournament on Saturday against host Vanguard at 6 p.m.
