The Grand Canyon University women’s soccer team has announced the addition of midfielder Lauren Garner and goalkeeper Kailey Thorpe to the 2012 roster. Garner and Thorpe join nine others as new additions to the roster for the upcoming season.
"Lauren's strength and composure in the middle of the park will serve us wonderfully this season and will play a significant role in winning the ball and moving it forward quickly,” said head coach Stevie Gill. “She has a great soccer background, a great attitude and a competitive spirit that will serve her well both on the playing field and beyond. We are looking forward to her arriving here in sunny Phoenix and getting acclimatized to the heat before the start of the season. Lauren is destined to be a top performer for us here at GCU straight out of the gates."
Garner hails from Hunstanton, United Kingdom, where she attended Smithdon High School. She was named Sportswoman of the Year from 2003-06 while at Smithdon. Garner was also named West Norfolk women’s sports Personality of the Year in 2005. She captained the netball team, rounders team, soccer team and form team throughout high school and was a member of the Norwich City Academy of Excellence from 2004-07.
Garner was named Most Valuable Player in 2007 for the Downham Market Ladies and her Kings Lynn squad were winners of the Norfolk Ladies Tournament in 2008.
Following high school, she played at Nottingham Trent University in the U.K. and was vice-captain for the Trent Women’s soccer team from 2010-12. She was promoted in the women’s premier league in 2009 after her Trent squad was league champion.
Garner will join the squad as a senior and will major in Business Administration.
Thorpe, who hails from Rochester, N.Y., was a three-year starting goalkeeper for Charles Finney High School in Rochester. She was named to the All-Greater Rochester Exceptional Senior Team following her final season at Charles Finney.
“Kailey will add serious depth to the goalkeeping position here alongside junior Catherine Lena, Croatian International Suzie Zigante and Shelby Bartusek,” said Gill. “The competition will be fierce for the starting spot. Cat (Lena) was destined to be the starting goalkeeper last season before she fell ill just before our training sessions began in August. Kailey will push the others with her work ethic and passion for the game.”
Thorpe also earned varsity letters in basketball and softball in high school.
She served as the No. 2 goalkeeper during her freshman season at Roberts Wesleyan College, a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Her squad won the Mid-America Conference title and advanced to the NCCAA national tournament before falling to eventual champion Palm Beach Atlantic.
She redshirted last season at Monroe Community College. The Tribunes won their 13th consecutive Region III championship and finished sixth at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national tournament in 2011.
