Grand Canyon University head baseball coach Andy Stankiewicz had another eventful week with the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team, as the squad won each of their four games against Coastal Plain League teams and joined forces with the 18U National teams for the Stars vs. Stripes Prospect Classic from June 29-July 3.
“The team is really starting to come together, as we see the offensive lineup forming and the guys are beginning to understand their roles,” Stankiewicz said. “They are starting to understand what we as a staff expect out of them. We are still figuring out the starting rotation, but that’s coming along well. With the international roster rules, we can only travel 22 guys and we wish that one or two more players could come with us. So we are looking for guys both on the mound and in the field to step up and earn a spot.”
The Stars vs. Stripes Classic, in its second year, is a one-of-a-kind experience where the teams play four games made up of mixed rosters. Three games were played at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, N.C., and one game at the National Training Complex in Cary. The mixed squads produced two tie games, with the Stars team winning the others by margins of 15-3 and 9-0.
“The Stars vs. Stripes Prospect Classic has been a great event,” said Stankiewicz. “They put this event together for the city of Cary and for the scouts. It is exciting because it was televised on MLB Network. Overall, it was a great event. It is cool to see the younger guys playing with the more veteran, college players.”
The squad travelled to Cuba yesterday and will face off against the Cuban National Team for the first of five games today. The two teams will play one game each day through July 9 at the Latin American Stadium in Havana, Cuba.
“Heading into Cuba carries with it a little bit of an unknown,” Stankiewicz said. “We have been playing summer ball clubs and have performed well against them. We are coming along and the team is coming together well. They are starting to loosen up. Initially, everyone was scoping it out and getting a feel for everything, and now guys are more comfortable playing together and being together. We will see what Cuba brings, but we are certainly looking forward to it.”
Having travelled extensively during his own playing career but never landing in Cuba has Stankiewicz eager about what the experience will bring. It is widely considered the best baseball stadium in Latin American and has served as host of a series between the Cuban National Team and the Baltimore Orioles of Major League Baseball.
“I am excited about travelling to Cuba because I have never been there,” explained Stankiewicz. “The passion for baseball is high and it will be a good experience for us. The stadium holds about 35-40,000 passionate people. We are the young American team going in there and I’m sure they will be excited to play us. The Cuban National Team is going to want to beat us and we want to beat them. I anticipate it will be a very compassionate and competitive environment.”
