The Grand Canyon University women’s basketball team announced the addition of Keyanna Johnson to the 2012-13 roster. Johnson previously played at East Los Angeles College in California and joins Jasmine Cannon, Justine Johnson and Jasmine Grayson as signees for the upcoming season.
Johnson led the South Coast Conference with 19.9 points per conference game last season en route to being named to the South Coast Conference First Team and First Team California Community College Athletic Association.
She tied for the conference lead with 17.6 points per game overall. Johnson posted a 44.1 field goal percentage, 30.5 three-point percentage and collected 114 steals throughout the season as her team posted a 24-7 record and hosted two playoff games, which they won.
She also scored the most single game points in a SCC game by an individual player when she finished with 40 on Feb. 10, 2010 against Mt. San Antonio College as her East Los Angeles College squad handed Mt. SAC their lone conference loss, 77-71.
Johnson was named Most Valuable Player of the Mendocino and Cypress tournaments and was an All-Tournament selection in the Saddleback and San Francisco Community College Tournaments last season.
“With the signing of Keyanna, we added a lot of fire power to an already explosive group of guards,” said head coach Trent May. “Keyanna is a very mature player who understands hard work. She brings a lot of toughness to the floor along with a great skill set. With that combination, she has the potential to be one of the best guards in the west region.”
Johnson played her freshman season at Los Angeles Southwest Community College and was a First-Team All Conference member.
Johnson earned a varsity letter in each of her four seasons at Hesperia High School, where she guided the Scorpions to back-to-back Mojave River League Championships in 2004 and 2005. Johnson was a two-time First Team All-Mojave River League selection and captained her team in her junior and senior years. She was also a First Team All-California Interscholastic Federation Selection and was named to the All-San Bernardino County First Team in 2004-05.
