Eetu Karvonen used a strong second half of his 100 breast final this evening to become Grand Canyon’s second individual champion at the NCAA Division II Swimming National Championships at the Mansfield ISD Natatorium in Mansfield, Tex.
Karvonen swam the 100 breast final with a time of 53.29, a new school record.
The Grand Canyon men’s team currently is in seventh place with 226 points, but is only 14 points out of third place and their second-consecutive podium finish with one day remaining in the championships.
Everton Kida broke his own school record in the 100 back with a 49.33, placing him 14th.
Ivan Nechunaev won the 200 fly consolation finals this evening, posting a time of 1:48.02. GCU’s 800 free relay team of
Michael Branning,
Tom Wahlers, Nechunaev and
Buddy Turner took seventh with a 6:37.84.
The women’s team will enter tomorrow’s final day of competition in fifth place with 172 points. They are one point out fourth place and their first-ever podium finish.
Stacey Wymer finished 10th in the 100 back this evening with a new school record 56.40.

Samantha Magnani earned All-American honors with their eighth-place swim in the 800 free relay (7:32.45).
The championships conclude tomorrow with finals in the 1650 free, 100 free, 200 back, 200 breast, and 400 free relay. Among the events,
Mychala Lynch and Polito highlight a strong women’s squad in the 100 free, while the men will be loaded up with Branning, Turner,
Artem Tretiakov and
Kyle Shores. Karvonen will look to go two-for-two in the breast events after winning tonight. The men will close out the meet with some unfinished business from last year and a chance to win the coveted 400 free relay.
