Grand Canyon University men’s and women’s track and field head coach Tom Flood was named 2012 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field National Men’s Coach of the Year, as announced by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
“I am completely humbled by this award,” said Flood. “To be mentioned in the same breath with coaches like Damon Martin (Adams State), Jerry Baltes (Grand Valley State), Jud Logan (Ashland) and the legendary George Williams (St. Augustine’s) is very gratifying.”
Flood led the Grand Canyon men’s squad to their first NCAA National Championship as the ‘Lopes won the meet with 54 total points, seven ahead of Adams State. Sophomores Dominique Hubert and Karlin Stewart won national titles in the 60-meter dash and long jump, respectively. Of GCU’s 12 entries in the meet, nine earned scoring positions. The team placed first, second, fifth and sixth in the long jump alone and gathered All-American honors in nine events.
“It was truly a team effort and a direct reflection of the outstanding performances of our student-athletes and the hard work of my assistant coaches,” Flood added. “Just two years ago, I had nothing but a vision as to how special this program could become; to accomplish what we have in such a short period of a time is truly a blessing.”
