The New York Red Bulls of Major League soccer hosted a workout at Grand Canyon University today in preparation for their match against the Pumas UNAM on Thursday, Feb. 23 at Chase Field. The team will also practice at GCU tomorrow.
The “Red Bull Reto del Sol” is scheduled to be played at 8 p.m. This marks the second year the Red Bulls have competed in Phoenix, as they squared off against Club Atlas de Guadalajara last season.
Head coach Hans Backe, defender Rafa Márquez and forward Thierry Henry hosted a press conference at Grand Canyon University Arena to speak about their upcoming match and expectations for the 2012 season.
“It means a lot to have the Red Bulls here and it is great that we are able to host a press conference in our gorgeous arena,” said Grand Canyon University men’s head soccer coach Petar Draksin. “These are two of the biggest players in the world that play at the highest level, so it is great to have them on campus and practice on our field.”
Among other top players in the United States and Mexico to play in the match are Juan Agudelo, Martin Bravo, Efraín Velarde and Darío Veróne.
The Red Bulls finished the 2011 season by advancing to the Western Conference Semifinals, while the Pumas are champions of the 2011 Clausura tournament after claiming their seventh championship against Monarcas Morelia.
“We have had some big-time teams practice on our old field, so it is exciting to have them here on our new field,” Draksin said. “This is what we want to do; we want to bring professionals to work out on this campus. When the Phoenix Suns were here, that was an excitement for basketball fans. For soccer people, this is exciting. We all have our own sports that we love passionately and this is hopefully just the beginning of bringing famous soccer players and personnel to visit our campus.”
