The Grand Canyon University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee hosted their annual Make-A-Wish Night at last night’s men’s and women’s basketball games at Grand Canyon University Arena.
GCU’s SAAC hosted five families with a total of 13 kids who were able to watch the games and participate in various activities throughout the night. The pizza party kicked off at 5:30 p.m. during the women’s game and the kids had the opportunity to go center court during the men’s game to help sing “Happy Birthday” to Grand Canyon’s mascot Thunder.
“Tonight was a great night for GCU. The athletic department and SAAC have worked so hard to raise money for Make-A-Wish and it was great to host the families on campus to give back to them,” said GCU and PacWest liaison Blake Schilly.
As part of an overall NCAA Division II initiative, Grand Canyon has already raised over $7000 to-date and is hoping to continue raising funds. Last year they collected just over $6400, the fifth-largest donation of any institution in Division II.
The event was held as part of the NCAA Division II’s “Week of Wishes” where institutions across the nation host events to bring awareness to their fundraising efforts and support of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. As a foundation, they seek to bring hope and happiness to children facing life-threatening medical conditions by granting their wish. GCU donations for the Make-A-Wish foundation are collected at every home athletic event. Visit gculopes.com to see sports’ schedules and when you can donate.
