The Grand Canyon University men’s swimming team climbed to No. 1 in the country in the newly released College Swimming Coaches Association of America Division II Poll. The women’s squad remained at No. 3.
The men earned their first-ever top ranking after moving up two spots from the previous poll.
“I am very proud of our guys,” said head coach Steve Schaffer. “It is very exciting to earn the No. 1 ranking. It says a lot about the hard work that our swimmers and staff have done. That being said, the only ranking that really matters is the final team standings at the NCAA Championships next month. Drury has won the last seven years in a row and they are not going to just step aside. If we want to finish the year on top, we still have to go out and earn it.”
The women remained at No. 3, matching their highest-ever ranking.
“Our women are really doing a great job and if they swim well at the NCAA’s they can bring home their first NCAA trophy,” said Schaffer.
The swim teams continue their steady rise among the ranks of the swimming elite over the past three seasons.
“It is really quite something when you think about it,” added Schaffer. “Three years ago neither of our teams placed at NCAA’s. Two years ago the men placed 16
th and the women were 31
st. Last year the men were fourth, winning their first NCAA trophy and the women tied for 10
th. It will be really fun to see how we improve this year. It would be great to come home with two more NCAA trophies!”
The GCU swim teams will next be in competition from Feb. 15-18, when they travel to San Antonio, Tex. for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships. The NCAA Championships will be held in Mansfield, Tex. from March 14-17.
