Grand Canyon University men’s and women’s track and field head coach Tom Flood has announced his recruiting class for the upcoming 2013 season.
“Again, this year I am really pleased with the depth and talent level of this year’s recruiting class,” said head coach Tom Flood. “We have added several high quality student-athletes that will again help us make a lot of noise on a national level; while at the same time we have added some much needed depth to our third year program that will allow us to be successful at the conference level this year too.”
The program won the 2012 NCAA Division II Men’s Indoor Track and Field National Championship in just its second year of existence and also produced two individual national champions in Dominique Hubert (60-meter dash) and Karlin Stewart (long jump). The men’s and women’s teams accumulated 35 All-American honors between the indoor and outdoor seasons under the guidance of Flood, who was named the 2012 United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field National Men’s Coach of the Year.

Samantha Bogatz, a sophomore sprinter from Mountain View, Calif., holds five school records from her time at St. Francis High School.
Best: 11.77 (100-meters); 23.54 (200-meters)
“Sam will make an immediate impact on a national level. Her personal bests would have qualified her in both dashes last year at the NCAA Championships and she will help make our 4x100m relay among the best in the nation.”
Jennifer Dowty, a sophomore sprinter from Glendale, Calif., placed fourth at the 2011 Western State Conference Championships with Glendale (CA) Community College. Dowty also broke the school record in the 400-meters with a time of 57.78 seconds.
Best: 24.68 (200-meters); 56.53 (400-meters)
“Jennifer brings some leadership and a wonderful work ethic to our women’s program. I look for her to qualify for the NCAA Championships in the 400-meters and help our 4x400m relay battle for a national title.”
Lauren Graham, a junior from Palmdale, Calif., was the 2011 pole vault runner-up at the NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships while with UC Colorado Springs. Graham was an NCAA Division II All-American in pole vault and was named the 2010-11 UCCS Female Athlete of the Year. She is also the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women’s pole vault record holder.
Best: 4.13 meters; 13 feet, 6.5 inches (pole vault)

Amy Hop, a junior from Riverside, Calif., was the pole vault runner-up at the 2012 California State Championships with Riverside Community College. Hop won the event at the 2012 Southern California Championships. She is also expected to compete in the hurdles for the women’s team.
Best: 12 feet, 4.5 inches (pole vault); 15.10 (100-meter hurdles)

Morgan Kueter, a freshman jumper from Anchorage, Alaska, was the high jump champion and 100-meter hurdles runner-up at the 2012 ASAA 4A Championships. In 2011 at the state championships, she won the high jump event while taking third in the 100-meter hurdles. Kueter was also a member of the winning 4x100-meter and 4x200-meter relay squads in 2011.

Vanessa Levy, a sophomore thrower from Clarendon, Jamaica, was an All-Conference and All-Region selection for Johnson County Community College.
Bests: 40 feet, 10.5 inches (shot put); 156 feet, 3 inches (discus); 50 feet, 2.5 inches (weight throw)
“Vanessa is an extremely talented student-athlete with a huge upside. She will make a major impact in several throwing events at the national level and will battle for a national title in the discus this year.”
Nyomi Mosley, a freshman thrower/jumper from Sedona, Ariz., was the 2012 AIA Division II
State Champion in the triple jump with a leap of 37 feet, three inches. Mosley also won the state crown in the discus throw with a mark of 118 feet, four inches. She owns the school record in the discus throw, shot put and triple jump.
Best: 39 feet, 9 inches (shot put); 120 feet (discus throw); 37 feet, 3 inches (triple jump)

Amanda Sims, a freshman hurdler from Mesa, Ariz., finished third in the 300-meter hurdles at the 2012 AIA Division I State Championships, an event that she won at the 2012 Arizona Meet of Champions. Sims, a product of Desert Ridge High School, was the fourth-place finisher in the 300-meter hurdles at the 2011 AIA Division I State Championships.
Best: 44.22 (300-meter hurdles); 58.47 (400-meters)

Sydney Tassielli, a freshman hurdler from Fountain Hills, Ariz., won 2012 state titles in the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles. She also won the Meet of Champions during her senior campaign with personal-best time of 14.93 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles. Tassielli was named All-Tribune First Team in the 100-meter hurdles in 2012. She won 330-meter hurdles state title in 2011 and was the runner-up in 100-meter hurdles. Tassielli’s team won state championships during her freshman and sophomore seasons.

Lindsey Wright, a freshman jumper from Reedsport, Ore., was the runner-up in the high jump, pole vault and triple jump at the 2012 OSAA Oregon 1A-3A State Championships, while winning the long jump crown. Wright was also the long jump and pole vault state champion at the 2011 OSAA 1A-3A championships and finished second in both the triple jump and high jump events en route to her team winning the state title. That same year she was named Athlete of the Year at both the district and state level. She was also the pole vault state champion in 2010.

Stephan Bullard, a junior mid-distance runner from Tucson, Ariz., finished fourth at the 2009 NJCAA National Championships in the 800-meters with Pima Community College and was the runner-up in the same event the following year at the Region I NJCAA Championships.
Best: 1:51.16 (800-meters)
“Stephan will bring us some much needed depth to our mid-distance area. He has a wonderful work ethic and I will look for him to qualify for the NCAA Championships in the 800-meters and help us in the 4x400m relay.”
Brandon Childs, a junior pole vaulter from Torrington, Wyo., was the 2011 Region I NJCAA runner-up in the pole vault while at Central Arizona College. Childs finished fourth in the same event at the 2010 championships.
Best: 4.90 meters; 16 feet, 1 inch (pole vault)
“Brandon will help make us a triple threat in the pole vault this year (along with Vince & Eric Frawley) at the national level.”
Joel Fraser, a junior pole vaulter from Gunnison, Colo., finished second in pole vault at the 2010 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships with UC Colorado Springs.

Dario Horvat, a sprinter, hails from Croatia. He finished fourth at the European Junior Championship in Tallin and 13
th place at the World Junior Championships in Moncton, Canada. Horvat was the fastest man in Croatia in both 2010 and 2011.
Best: 10.41 (100-meter); 21.51 (200-meter); 6.74 (60-meter)
“Dario is an extremely talented student-athlete and will make an immediate impact at the national level in the sprints right away. His 60-meter best would have ranked as the third fastest time in the country last year.”
Lance Parker, a junior sprinter from Fort Worth, Texas, was the runner-up at the 2011 Texas Tech Invite in the 200-meters, while taking third in the 100-meter dash. Parker was ranked in the top-10 in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes while with Western Texas Community College.
Best: 10.43 (100-meter); 21.15 (200-meter)
“Lance is a very talented sprinter. His personal bests would have allowed him to qualify for the NCAA Championships in both the 100-meters and 200-meters last year. He will help our 4x100m relay team push for a national title this year.”
Brandon Pineda, a sophomore thrower from Los Angeles, Calif., won back-to-back AIA Division I state titles in the shot put and discus throw in 2010 and 2011 at Tolleson.
Best: 63 feet (shot put); 180 feet, 2 inches (discus throw)
“Brandon is a flat out stud! He is probably the most naturally gifted athlete I have ever recruited. He will make a lot of noise in all the throwing events and has the potential to be a NCAA Champion in the discus this year.”
Josh Ralston, a freshman sprinter/jumper from Detroit, Mich., took fifth place in the triple jump at the 2012 AIA Division I State Championships at Hamilton. Ralston was also the triple jump champion and runner-up in the 400-meter dash at the Chandler City Meet.

Niels Theijs, a freshman sprinter from Alken, Belguim, was the 2012 Belgian 60-meter dash champion.

“Niels will surprise a lot of folks this year. He is having an outstanding fall and has the potential to be an All-American in the dashes as a true freshman.”
GCU will begin the new season with their intrasquad scrimmage on Friday, Dec. 7 at 3:30 p.m. on the GCU Track. The indoor season begins with the Lumberjack Invitational, hosted by Northern Arizona University on Jan. 12 in Flagstaff, Ariz.
