The 13
th-ranked Grand Canyon University women’s basketball team defeated No. 8 UC San Diego today, 64-62, in their second game as part of the Disney Classic in Anaheim, Calif. The Antelopes are now 1-1 on the season, while the Tritons fell to 0-2.
GCU posted a 38.2 field goal percentage (21-for-55) and made a marked improvement in their three-point percentage as they drained five of nine attempts (55.6 percent). UC San Diego shot 33.3 percent (19-for-57) from the field. The ‘Lopes also outrebounded the Tritons, 43-32.
Judy Jones was the high-scorer for GCU with 17 points, while three others also posted double-digit scoring:
Chigozie Ekweozor with 12 points and
Maylinn Smith and
Deanna Daniels with 11.
Jenna Pearson led the squad with eight rebounds.
The two teams traded baskets to open the game before the Tritons scored nine unanswered points to take a 13-4 lead with 15:04 remaining in the first half. After calling a timeout, the ‘Lopes went on a 9-2 scoring run to pull within two points at 15-13 with just under 11 minutes to play. A Smith three-pointer gave GCU a 16-15 advantage with 10:26 to play in the first.
The ‘Lopes would lead by as many as six at 23-17 before UC San Diego reclaimed a 24-23 lead with five and half minutes on the clock. The Tritons led by as many as five before GCU made it a three-point game at the half, 32-29.
GCU pulled within two points of the Tritons in the second half before UC San Diego extended the lead to seven points, 42-35, at the first media timeout of the half. The ‘Lopes then used a 7-0 run to notch the score at 42 with 12:37 remaining in the game and continued the run as they took a 45-42 lead with 11 minutes to play.
The game remained tightly contested until GCU took their largest lead of the game at eight points, 62-54, with 3:38 on the clock. UC San Diego made it a two-point game at 62-60 after scoring six straight points. The teams traded missed shots until Daniels put the game out of reach with two made free throws to make it a four-point game with 11 seconds to play. A last second shot by the Tritons gave the ‘Lopes a tightly-contested two-point victory.
