In a PacWest volleyball marathon, No. 13 Grand Canyon dropped a five-set heartbreaker to California Baptist 3-2 at Van Dyne Gymnasium in Riverside, Calif. Friday.
GCU (14-3, 4-3) lost by set scores of 18-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-21, 16-14.
It was the third meeting between the two squads since CBU joined the PacWest in 2011. All three matches have gone five sets; GCU won both five-setters last season. The teams play in Phoenix Oct. 27.
The match took two hours, 25 minutes.

Hayleigh Friemoth had a career-high 23 kills, the most kills by a GCU player since
Caelen Hiller had 28 at Fort Lewis on Aug. 28, 2009.
Neither team led by more than two points in the fifth set. Grand Canyon’s last lead was 12-10. Breaking a 10-10 tie on a kill by senior setter
Kristen Preach, GCU went up two on a California Baptist ball-handling error. The Lancers scored the next three points, but Preach and Hiller followed with kills to give GCU its lone match-point. CBU scored the final three points on two GCU attack errors and a service ace.
Up 2-1, GCU had a pair of five-point leads in the fourth set and led by three as late as 20-17.
"Disappointing loss against a good team," said GCU coach Kris Naber. "I felt like we had opportunities to close it out and didn't capitalize when we had the chance.
"We'll use this as a learning experience heading into tomorrow's match."
Preach finished with nine kills, 49 assists, 16 digs and one service ace. Sophomore libero
Mackenzie Phelps had 30 digs. Hiller had 16 digs and three service aces. Junior middle blocker
Kristen Johannsen had the team’s lone solo block and added four block assists. Junior middle blocker
Lanie Muys had four block assists. Johannsen, Muys and senior right side hitter
Sydney McDowell each had seven kills.
Grand Canyon had more kills 61-54, but trailed CBU in digs (103-95), total team blocks (14-9), service aces (8-7) and hitting percentage (.139-.113).
California Baptist improved to 12-2 overall and 5-0 in the PacWest.
Grand Canyon will play at Azusa Pacific (11-5, 3-3) 5 p.m. Saturday.
