A New Season Is Here, and Let the Blogging Begin
I had to talk myself into doing this.
Mike McNally, GCU’s assistant athletic director for media relations, asked several months ago if I’d consider blogging during the 2012-13 Antelope basketball season. Mike is always looking to do different things with the men’s and women’s teams. This would be different, all right, a fan-friendly blog designed to supplement the regular stories that appear on
www.gculopes.com.
Mike came to me because … well, I haven’t the foggiest notion why. Maybe he had ingested one too many teriyaki burgers at the University of Hawai’i at Hilo when GCU played there. (Trust me, the burgers are absolutely intoxicating, worthy of planning an entire islands vacation around.) Or perhaps he didn’t want to be the only one stuck with our teams in the garden spot of Fresno, Calif., this season. (If you’re from Fresno, please don’t yell at me.)
Anyway, there were good reasons for me not to do it. As communications director at GCU, I write plenty already and wasn’t looking to add to the load. Also, I love watching basketball, and worrying about what goes into the blog might detract from my enjoyment of the games. Finally, my son is on our men’s team, so how about getting someone else to do it? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
The trouble is, there
isn’t anyone else, particularly when our teams go on the road. And, boy, is the road ever fun. There’s nothing like being the only GCU fan, readily identifiable in purple, when we’re playing in places like Belmont, Calif., or Durango, Colo., although when our guys lost by 40 points in Durango three years ago, that wasn’t such a blast.
Over the past three seasons, I’ve seen 66 of 85 Antelope men’s games, both home and away — for stats freaks, that’s 77 percent, acceptable free-throw shooting — and almost as many of our women’s games. I’m qualified to blog, I suppose, because I keep showing up.
OK, so let’s do this thing. Because of realignment by the Pacific West Conference, our teams won’t go to Hawai’i this season (alas, no teriyaki burgers). But with four new schools in the PacWest, they’ll now go to San Diego, suburban L.A., Oakland and the aforementioned Fresno. They’re also traveling to Anaheim in a couple of weeks to play in the Disney Tip-Off Classic.
It is my duty as a journalist to report from these and other places, describing what it’s like to be around our players, coaches, athletic trainers, parents and fans (um, if you’ve read this far, that’s you) for an entire season. If you’re a sports fan, admit it, you’ve always wanted to follow your favorite team around. Well, these are my favorite teams.
Truth be told, I can’t wait to get started. And for those who are wondering, I’ll be traveling on my own dime. It’s worth it, although you might see me standing outside GCU Arena holding a “Will Write for Food” sign toward the end of the season, depending on how good I am at budgeting.
It’s important to establish, also, what I
won’t be doing in the blog:
-
I’ll leave the nuts-and-bolts game accounts and stats in the capable hands of Mike McNally and Morgan Ballard of GCU’s sports information staff.
-
I won’t second-guess our coaches or criticize our players.
-
I won’t meddle in either team’s “family matters.” There are things that need to be handled in-house with any team, and I simply won’t go there.
Sound good? I’ve already got some cool ideas I want to pursue for the blog, which we’re calling “Posting Up.” I know you’ll have suggestions for material, too, and I’ll happily listen to any and all of them (
doug.carroll@gcu.edu).
Better get your ’Lopes up, because it’s going to be a great year for GCU basketball. I’ve decided to wear a No. 1 Minnesota Vikings jersey all season; I’m not a Vikings fan, but it’s the right color and I’ll explain the jersey’s significance in a future post. That should make it easy for you to find me in the Arena. If you don’t know me, stop by and introduce yourself.
You never know, there might be room for one more on that trip to Fresno.
