The Grand Canyon University baseball team will open their season under first-year head coach Andy Stankiewicz when they welcome Colorado Mesa on Feb. 3 at Brazell Stadium on the campus of GCU. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. GCU will then play two games on Feb. 4 and one game on Feb. 5, all of which are against Colorado Mesa.
The Antelopes were picked to finish fourth in the Pacific West Conference in a poll released earlier today, receiving 21 points overall. Dixie State was picked to finish first after winning the conference last season.
The ‘Lopes placed five players on the Pre-Season All-PacWest Baseball team.
P.J. Garcia was selected to the All-PacWest team as a second baseman following a 2011 season that saw him hit .364 with a team-high-tying 33 RBI and team-best .458 on-base percentage. Garcia was also selected to the preseason squad in 2009 and 2011.
Ernesto Ortiz was the lone shortstop of any team to earn a preseason nod after hitting .340 with a team-high-tying 33 RBI last season. Ortiz was a First Team All-PacWest selection in 2011.
Joey Bristyan was selected to the team after batting .329 and grabbing a team-high-tying nine stolen bases last season.
Kyle Peterson, a transfer from Eastern Michigan University, was one of two catchers named on the preseason team. Peterson posted a .987 fielding percentage in his time at Eastern Michigan, while also collecting eight home runs and 42 RBI over two seasons with Chandler-Gilbert Community College.
Brady Wager made his first preseason team following a 2011 campaign in which he garnered Second Team All-PacWest honors. He was named PacWest Pitcher of the Week for games ending Feb. 10, 2011 and led the team’s starters with a 3.72 ERA over 12 starts, including one complete game, with a team-high 56 strikeouts while holding opponents to a .244 batting average.
GCU boasts a veteran roster with 12 seniors, 12 juniors, three sophomores and seven freshmen. Of their 26 players from the state of Arizona, 21 are from the Valley.
The ‘Lopes are slated to participate in their annual Alumni Game at Brazell Stadium this Saturday, Jan. 28, at 11 a.m.
