Grand Canyon University’s Ivan Nechunaev was today named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Men’s Swimmer of the Week, while Diana Volk was named the Women’s Swimmer of the week, after their performances against Biola on Jan. 21.
Ivan Nechunaev posted two first-place swims and a second-place finish to lead the ‘Lopes with a team high 22 points. Nechunaev set a new school record in the 1650 free, posting a winning time of 16:45.37. He won the 100 fly with a NCAA B cut standard of 50.80.
Diana Volk scored 21 points to lead the women’s squad. Volk won the 500 free (5:15.91) and 100 free (1:56.33). She also had a third-place finish in the 100 breast (1:09.41).
This is the seventh and eighth weekly RMAC honor of the season for GCU. Inha Kotsur, Mychala Lynch, Samantha Magnani and Catherine Polito have won the award on the women’s side, while Buddy Turner has been a winner on the men’s side on two occasions.
The women’s team returns to the pool on Jan. 28 for a highly anticipated dual with Division I Northern Arizona. The meet will be held at the Brophy Sports Complex in Phoenix and begins at 1 p.m.
