The Grand Canyon University women’s basketball team moved up to 11
th in the recently released USA Today/ESPN Top-25 Coaches Poll. They were tied for 12
th with Ashland University in last week’s poll.
The ‘Lopes (13-1, 5-1) are riding a nine-game winning streak, including five consecutive Pacific West Conference matchups. GCU is 5-0 on the road and have now won 12-straight regular season road contests dating back to last season.
Among all NCAA Division II schools, GCU ranks first with 46.6 points-allowed-per-game and a 29.8 defensive field goal percentage, fourth with a 12.6 rebound margin, seventh with a 92.9 winning percentage and 10
th with a 16.8 scoring margin. Individually, Maylinn Smith ranks second with a 93.0 free throw percentage.
GCU is led by Smith with 15.5 points-per-game, which ranks third in the conference. Jallisa Butler posted her team-leading fifth double-double in the team’s 65-49 win over Dixie State on Jan. 16, scoring 15 points and grabbing 18 rebounds. Butler leads the conference with a 60.6 fielding percentage and ranks second with 10.7 rebounds-per-game. She was named PacWest Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 16-22 after scoring a combined 25 points with 26 rebounds in GCU’s victories over Dixie State and Hawai’i Hilo.
GCU will next be in action when they host Hawai’i Pacific today at Grand Canyon University Arena at 4:30 p.m. The ‘Lopes will then hit the road for five straight games, four of which will take place in Hawai’i, beginning with a Jan. 28 matchup at BYU-Hawai’i at 8 p.m. Arizona time.
