The Grand Canyon University baseball program announced the addition of two local players,
Seth Fretheim of Mesquite High School and
Hunter Miller of Salpointe Catholic, to the 2013 roster.
Fretheim, a senior infielder, is a four-year Varsity starter for the Wildcats and was a 2011 First-Team All-Region selection. He was also named the Most Valuable Player of Don Mattingly’s World Series qualifier in 2011. During his junior season at Mesquite, he hit .402 with 33 runs scored and 27 RBI as his team went 29-6.
“Seth is a complete player,” said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. “He shows great plate discipline to go with a solid hitting approach. He can play anywhere on the field, which will allow great versatility in our program.”
Miller, a right-handed pitcher and catcher, hit .311 with 28 runs scored and 36 RBI during his junior campaign for the Lancers and was named to the All-Southern Arizona 5A Second Team. He is a four-year Varsity letter-winner and entering the current season, has garnered All-Region Team honors for three consecutive years.
“Hunter is a very aggressive pitcher that has the ability to go behind the plate as well,” Stankiewicz said. “He has a big athletic frame and has tremendous upside. We are extremely excited to have Hunter join our program.”
Fretheim and Miller join
10 other local standouts who earlier this school year signed national letters-of-intent to play for the Antelopes’ 2013 squad.
The 2012 season will officially being on Feb. 3, when Colorado Mesa visits Brazell Stadium in Phoenix for a four-game series.
