GCU Draws Split at Grand Canyon Duals

Four teams, including GCU, participated in the Grand Canyon Duals. San Francisco State won all three of its duals -- 27-10 over Colorado School of Mines, 32-10 over Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and 25-16 over GCU. Colorado School of Mines won one of its three contests, losing to San Francisco State and GCU and beating Embry-Riddle 45-12. Embry-Riddle, an NAIA school, lost both of its duals.
Redshirt sophomore Victor Carazo (Modesto, CA/Modesto Junior College) ranked No. 7 nationally at 165 pounds, won both of his matches, 5-3 over Jordan Larsen of Colorado School of Mines and a 10-1 major decision over Ian Wrenn of San Francisco State. Carazo now is Carazo is 27-4 on the season.
Junior Todd Wilcox (pictured, Sacramento, CA/Sierra College), ranked No. 7 nationally at 133 pounds, won his first match of the day, 6-0 over Kyle McMinn of Colorado School of Mines, but lost his second one, 10-8 to No. 3-ranked Naveed Bagheri of San Francisco State in the day's marquee matchup. Wilcox now is 30-2 on the season.
GCU's other star, 157-pound redshirt senior Stephen Towne (pictured, Phoenix, AZ/Menlo College), won a 9-4 decision over Travis Wokasch of Colorado School of Mines and a 6-3 decision over Isaiah Jimenez of San Francisco State.
Embry-Riddle's 133-pounder, No. 3-ranked Tyler Chang, lived up to his billing with a 14-3 major decision over Wrenn and a fall over Mike Brown of Colorado School of Mines at 1:57.
Other Top-10 wrestlers who competed today included San Francisco State's Ben Lockett, No. 4-ranked at 141 pounds, who finished 3-0 on the day; Colorado School of Mines, No. 5 at 149 pounds, who won his two matches by fall and technical fall; and San Francisco State heavyweight Steve Franklin, No. 8, who won all three of his matches, two of them with pins.
This was the Antelopes' last home match of the 2009-10 season. Their next duals will be against Adams State and Mesa State on Jan. 29 in Grand Junction, Colo., and against Chadron State on Jan. 30, also in Grand Junction.
